This special Batman: Arkham Asylum Box Set was released by DC Direct in 2009, bringing Batman together with three of the most notorious residents of Gotham City's psychiatric hospital: The Joker, The Penguin, and Killer Croc.
Although the set was released in the same year as Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum, these figures are not based on the designs from the video game. DC Direct put the set together using modified versions of previously released figures and placed the four characters together in special Arkham Asylum packaging.
Batman is joined by The Joker, The Penguin, and the imposing Killer Croc. The figures vary significantly in size and, depending on the character, measure approximately 4.25 to 6.75 inches.
In addition to the four action figures, the original set includes a special 64-page book featuring four stories about the residents of Arkham Asylum. This collection includes stories from Showcase '95 #11, The Batman Chronicles #3, Batman #585, and Robin #85.
The set was released on September 23, 2009, making it an interesting DC Direct release from the exact same period that the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game made its debut. For collectors, it is important to distinguish this comic-based box set from the later DC Direct action figure series that was actually based on Rocksteady's video game.
