This special Batman & The Joker Collector Set was released in 2009 by DC Direct and is based on Frank Miller's influential graphic novel Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. The set combines two variant versions of Batman and The Joker with a special 48-page Prestige Format reprint of The Dark Knight Returns #1.
In The Dark Knight Returns, Bruce Wayne has left his career as Batman behind him for years. As Gotham City sinks further into violence and crime, an older and bitter Bruce returns as The Dark Knight. His return also has major consequences for The Joker, who seems to come back to life after years of apathy as soon as he hears that Batman is active again.
For this Collector Set, DC Direct used the well-known Batman and Joker sculpts from the earlier The Dark Knight Returns action figure series. For this special release, both figures were given a modified color scheme that refers to earlier moments in the story.
The figures are executed in Frank Miller's characteristic style and are in the 7” scale. The combination of two figures, the special variant deco, and the included comic makes this Collector Set clearly different from the regular individually packaged Batman and Joker from the original series.
